hako.to

a small box of single-purpose tools

What is hako.to?

hako (箱) is the Japanese word for “box.” This site is a small box of free, single-purpose web tools — each one does exactly one thing, runs entirely in your browser, and needs no account, install, or download. There are no paywalls and no sign-ups. Open a tool, use it, close the tab.

Everything here is built and maintained as a personal project. The tools keep no server-side profile of you: your scores, settings, and progress live in your own browser’s local storage, not on an account. Where a tool shows an ad, it’s a single unobtrusive unit that helps cover hosting — nothing more.

The tools

kana.
A fast-paced hiragana typing game. A Japanese kana appears, you type its romaji reading before time runs out, and chain correct answers into a combo. A built-in mastery tracker shows which of the 46 base hiragana you still mix up — so it doubles as a drill for learning the script.
week.
The current ISO 8601 week number at a glance, plus a set of everyday office calculators: days and business days between two dates, percentage change, VAT and discount adders, margin versus markup, and compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Useful when you just need one number, fast.
breathe.
A calm box-breathing timer. Follow the expanding and contracting guide through the four equal phases — inhale, hold, exhale, hold — to slow your breathing down. Good for a quick reset between tasks or before sleep.
lele.
Ukulele practice for absolute beginners: a built-in tuner, a chord trainer, a one-minute chord-change drill, a strum metronome, and a handful of easy first songs. Everything you need for the first week of playing.
count.
A fast word and character counter. Paste any text to see words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines and an estimated reading time — updating as you type. It also converts case (UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, Sentence case) and tidies up spacing. Handy for essays, meta descriptions, tweets and anything written to a limit. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
pass.
A password generator that makes strong random passwords or memorable word-based passphrases. Choose the length, pick which character types to include, skip look-alike characters, and check the strength as you go. Every password is generated on your own device with the browser’s secure randomness — nothing is ever sent or stored.
color.
A color picker and converter. Pick a color or type a HEX, RGB or HSL value and see all three at once, copy any format in a tap, and build tints and shades. A built-in contrast checker shows the WCAG AA/AAA ratio against black and white text. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
convert.
A unit converter for length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, time and digital storage. Type a value and see it in every unit at once — centimetres to inches, kilograms to pounds, Celsius to Fahrenheit, MB to GB and more. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
